Testing out: barefoot shoes

Running again. I bought Merrel’s barefoot trainers some time ago, but I haven’t done any running with them yet. Today I went again to Kauppi, since the track is softer than pavement and thus a good place to try out my pink shoes. Barefoot running is supposed to naturally reduce impact on the ground by forcing the runner to land on mid-foot or fore-foot rather than on the heel. Natural cushioning that is. I’m not going to get rid of my softer shoes, but I’m gonna give these flat ones a change too.

It does feel a bit different to run with un-cushioned shoes. My calfs are way more tired than usually. And I ran slower than usual. But maybe when I get hang of the new (to me) running technique, the pace will pick up too.

I also biked to the track and back, about 8k all together cycling. Then running up and down and up and down and up and down the hills in the forest. Fun! Let’s see if my legs are sore tomorrow 🙂

Distance: 5.2km, Avg.pace: – min/km, Avg.speed: 8 km/h

Total distance run this year: 156km (200km coming up, yaiks!)

Up and down

I went for a jog in Kauppi today. Kauppi is a recreational forest located about 3km from the city centre. Recreational forests give all residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, and they also serve as educational areas for schoolchildren and training areas for many sports clubs. (source)

I took the basic 3k route. There are also some route called Easy 3k and one called Competition 5k. But reliable sources have told me that the 5k is just hills. But so was the one I took too. Up and down, up and down.

At times it felt like a rush hour at the track, there were so many people running and walking or biking or just soaking up the sun. And there were also people kayaking and diving, so plenty of things to do at Kauppi. I passed also a soccer game and pesäpallo (Finnish equivalent to baseball) game, and a race track for dogs. Nice place 🙂

Run stats:

  • Distance: 6km, Avg.pace: – min/km, Avg.speed: 9 km/h (I didn’t get real stats, but I ran twice the 3k track in 45min)

Total distance run this year: 151km

TRX torture for legs

Since I didn’t have an excuse for just doing triceps and biceps, on Saturday I headed for the gym head filled with thoughts about deadlift and squats and that sort of things. But well, both squat racks were taken (come on people, sun was shining and it was HOT outside, go there so I can deadlift and not be outside), I had to figure something else out. I decided to do some TRX. For those of you who don’t know what TRX is, here’s a short explanation.

TRX is a workout system that leverages gravity and your bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises. You’re in control of how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise – because you can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance.” –source

TRX is quite fun, and you can do circuit training or just focus on certain muscle groups, what ever you want. This is what I did:

  • Pistol squats
  • Balance lunges
  • Push-ups (as in the pic)
  • Row
  • Bicep curls
  • Tricep extension
  • Planks
  • And some other abs too, without the TRX suspension system

My legs are really really sore, the one legged squats were tough! As you can see from my expression.

On Sunday I finally went for a jog. I’m not gonna call it a run, since I walked half of it, and the jog wasn’t that long. But my pollen-filled lungs didn’t fail, so I can run again. And guess who was playing music for me during my run? Bon Jovi!

He was behind the appartment block. But he was there 🙂

It was a great and warm day, and I really hope my shiny white legs got some sun. Despite the sun block. Lots of it.

Biceps and triceps fool

You know all those young men at the gym who only work on their biceps and chest? I apparently have joined equally funny “triceps and biceps-club. Cause that has been my workout of choise last couple of times at the gym… I don’t have any explanation execpt that I just have felt like doing them. I’ve been biking more than usual, so my legs have been tired (excuse?)..

At least my workouts have been fun and biceps are still sore (not that is any indication for a great workout) from yesterdays session.

Tomorrow I’m gonna try running, it has been raining so maybe there’s little less pollen around.

A little bit of cycling

Back in business, I’m not gonna let a little allergy win. Couple of hours of cycling it was today. It’s getting really really green here, what a change to that dull spring. I really don’t like spring that much. It’s all gray, brown and somewhat dirty and dusty. This green thing, this I like:
