It’s been a weird week in Finland this week. We had a first of May celebrations on Wednesday and this means this week has had two Mondays and two Fridays. Exhausting.
In Finland, 1st of May is nowadays more student party than a workers party. In my home town there is a Technical University and a University, so there’s a lot of student action going on. Technical students start their 1st of May (or Wappu as we call it) couple of weeks ago. Parties every night, competitions and even an own radio station for a week. It all comes to it’s glorious ending on the 30.4. – 1.5.2013. At midnight comes a time when the first year students get to wear their cap for the first time. Technical University Students have their own cap, which they get at the end of the first year. Then, on the first of may in Tampere the first year students go and get dipped in the rapids which flow through the down. After that, they are fully fledged members of the TUT students. It’s all a good laugh, and nobody really cares if you get yourself cold and wet in the rapids or not. Most do though, as a rite of passage. Here are some pics from my wappu mayhem, which I started by going to the gym 😀
A message I got from FourSquare when checking in at my gym! Cool 🙂
First we took a bus to my friends house for some sparkling wine and BBQ.
Then back to the city center at midnight. And then to an after-party and finally home around half-past four in the morning. You might guess that the following day was not the most productive of them all..
There they go! To the ice-cold rapids! We old-ones who have already got our caps and done our dipping had a picnic and just enjoyed the sun.
A great day, which ended with a dinner with friends. Sleep came early, and todays workday was quite painful. Maybe tomorrow is running day again. Today I was too tired to go. How was your First of May? Did you or do you celebrate it at all?
